Navigating the Capital Budget Dilemma Before the New Year

Navigating the Capital Budget Dilemma Before the New Year

We are in the final quarter of the year. For many business owners, this brings a very specific type of headache: the capital budget dilemma. You have funds left over, and if you don’t spend them by midnight on December 31, they vanish from next year’s allocation; or worse, they simply translate into a higher tax bill.

Your first step should always be a conversation with your accountant, but my job is to make sure your technology actually returns a positive investment. Buying technology just to burn cash is a terrible idea. Buying technology strategically to improve your efficiency, secure your network, and lower your tax burden? That is just good business.

If you find yourself staring at a surplus in your 2026 IT budget, you have a brief window to make that money work for you. Here is exactly how to do it.

The Section 179 Tax Advantage

Uncle Sam is rarely accused of being generous, but Section 179 of the IRS tax code is a rare exception to that notion. The code is designed to encourage businesses to invest in themselves by purchasing necessary equipment.

In short, Section 179 allows you to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment or software bought or financed during the tax year. Instead of writing off a new server piece by piece over five years through depreciation, you can write off the entire purchase price on your 2026 tax return.

There is a catch, however. To qualify for the deduction, the equipment must be purchased and actually put into service by midnight on December 31, 2026. A box sitting unopened in your storage closet on New Year’s Eve does not count. The process is actually pretty simple, but it means you need to make your procurement decisions right now so there is time for shipping, installation, and configuration.

The Danger of Dragging End-of-Life Hardware into 2027

I frequently talk to business owners who operate under the "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" philosophy. When it comes to business technology, this is a dangerous game to play.

Running end-of-life hardware into a new year is one of the easiest ways to guarantee downtime. When hardware reaches its end-of-life date, the manufacturer stops providing support and, more importantly, stops issuing security patches. When that happens, your network becomes an open door for cyberattacks. People aren’t afraid of cyberattacks; they’re afraid of the consequences. They don’t want the fines, and they don’t want to be stolen from.

Downtime is an absolute thief. If you have an aging server or firewall that is out of warranty, replacing it now uses your 2026 budget to prevent a catastrophic failure in Q1 of 2027.

Fast-Turnaround IT Upgrades to Make Right Now

If you are trying to beat the December 31 deadline, you need to focus on technology that can be procured and deployed quickly. Ordering a highly customized server in mid-November might result in shipping delays that push your installation into January, nullifying your 2026 tax benefits.

Instead, look at these fast-turnaround upgrades:

  • Network switches and firewalls
  • Pre-funded cloud software licensing
  • Targeted workstation replacements

Time is a precious commodity for businesses, largely because it is one of the most fleeting. If you want to leverage your remaining 2026 capital budget to improve your infrastructure and lower your tax liabilities, the clock is ticking.

Don't wait until the second week of December to realize your firewall is six years old and your team is complaining about their slow computers. Call CoreTech to get help with your network and make the most of your end-of-year budget. Call us today at (270) 282-4926.
